What is therapeutic boxing?

Therapeutic boxing is a body-orientated, non-contact-based method that uses elements from boxing training and body therapy. Therapeutic boxing makes it possible to reduce stress, regulate inner tension and achieve self-efficacy. Work is done without sparring - on pads, sandbags or in motion.

The focus is on clear movements, rhythm, strength dosage and conscious breathing. This creates a safe framework in which the body can once again be experienced as a resource.

What is therapeutic boxing suitable for?

Scientific studies and practical reports show positive effects, particularly for

  • Stress, excessive demands, inner restlessness
  • depressive mood, listlessness
  • Anxiety and emotional tension
  • Difficulties with emotion and impulse regulation
  • psychosomatic complaints
  • neurological diseases (e.g. Parkinson's, after a stroke)

Therapeutic boxing does not replace psychotherapy, but it can complement it effectively. Change occurs not only through understanding, but also through concrete physical experience. Embodiment research has shown that movement, posture and tension have a direct influence on emotions and stress management.

Individual coaching

In the individual setting, the training is customised:

  • Pace, intensity and exercises are orientated to the form of the day and the goal
  • Focus on stabilisation, self-awareness and regulation
  • Space for brief reflection and transfer to everyday life

Suitable for people who are specifically suffering from stress, emotional tension or physical discomfort.
want to work with uncertainty.

Group training (max. 6 people)

The group setting also offers:

  • Social resonance without pressure to perform
  • Clear structure and security
  • Shared experience of strength, rhythm and tranquillity

Studies from clinical settings show that group formats in particular can boost motivation, self-esteem
and a sense of belonging.

Safety & framework applies to therapeutic boxing in individual coaching and group training

  • No physical contact
  • Clear rules, clear boundaries
  • Professional guidance
  • No excessive demands

The most important rule: Nobody gets hurt - neither physically nor psychologically.

Sequence of a typical unit - example structure

Arrival and check-in (1-3 min): Clarification of the form of the day, physical limits, goal of the session (e.g. „reduce tension“, „become courageous“, „clear head“).

Warm-up & orientation (5-10 min): Mobilisation, breathing rhythm, floor/stand stability.

Main part: Boxing-based exercise sequences (20-40 min): claw or sandbag work, shadowboxing, coordination/reaction exercises, step sequences - without sparring, dosed, progressive.

Cool-down (5-10 min): Down-regulate: Breathing, relaxation, short mindfulness sequence if necessary.

Transfer (2-5 min): What has changed? What can be used in everyday life?

The decisive difference is the contact - and the target group.

Try out action patterns

Experienced boxers do not regulate their strength through thinking, but through physical experience. From a physical science perspective, this is no coincidence: with increasing experience, physical self-awareness improves, as does the ability to feel and control tension, force and effect in one's own body depending on the situation.

It is precisely this ability that is specifically trained and transferred in strategic boxing coaching. Consciously dosing strength, taking responsibility for your own actions and decisions, protecting your own boundaries and asserting yourself - and remaining clear, capable and calm under pressure.

This takes place within a framework that allows for play, curiosity and experimentation. Sustainable change does not come about through coercion, but through freedom of action.

Yes, several studies show that boxing without physical contact:

  • Reduced stress and inner tension
  • Can alleviate anxiety and depressive symptoms
  • Strengthens self-esteem, body awareness and self-efficacy

Boxing training was also found to be helpful for emotion regulation in psychiatric and inpatient settings (for selected literature, see Science).

Research shows the opposite: boxing can help to regulate aggression in a controlled manner instead of acting it out unconsciously - provided the framework is clear and professionally managed.

Therapeutic boxing: for stress, psychological strain, desire for stabilisation

Strategic boxing coaching: for personal development, leadership, decision-making skills - for healthy people

Physical fitness does not play a major role in either method - curiosity and an open mind are enough!
